Vivid Sydney 2025 lit up the Harbour City once again with jaw-dropping light installations, large crowds, and world-class creative energy. As one of Australia’s most iconic festivals, Vivid transforms Sydney’s streets and landmarks into a vibrant canvas of colour and design — and I was there to capture it all.

From the glowing sails of the Sydney Opera House to immersive installations around Circular Quay, this year’s Vivid Sydney light displays pushed creative boundaries. The interactive projections, large-scale designs, and soundscapes turned the city into a living gallery, drawing in thousands of visitors each night.
📸 The Challenge (and Reward) of Photographing Vivid Sydney
Photographing Vivid Sydney isn’t easy — the sheer number of people alone can make setting up shots a challenge. This year saw record-breaking crowds, with tourists, locals, and families weaving through illuminated walkways and light tunnels. Despite the busy atmosphere, the energy was infectious, and finding the right angles between heads and smartphones added a fun challenge to the shoot.
Each photo I captured tells a story — of colour, movement, and the shared joy of people coming together in awe of creative expression. Whether it was laser shows at Darling Harbour, glowing installations in The Rocks, or the Museum of Contemporary Art wrapped in dynamic light patterns, every stop had something visually stunning to offer.
🎨 Design Highlights from Vivid Sydney 2025
Here are just a few of the design elements that stood out:
- Opera House Projections: Bold, vivid colours in motion, reflecting the event’s theme of ‘Human Connection.’
- Interactive Light Sculptures: Hands-on installations that responded to sound and touch, delighting both kids and adults.
- Harbour Bridge Light Trails: Long exposure magic — and a must-capture moment for every photographer.
🧭 Tips for Visiting Vivid Sydney
If you’re planning to visit in the future, here are a few quick tips:
- Arrive early to beat the biggest crowds and secure great photo spots.
- Use a tripod if you’re shooting long exposures.
- Explore less crowded zones, like Barangaroo and Darling Square, for more breathing room and equally impressive displays.
📷 Photography Tips for Vivid Sydney
- Capturing Vivid Sydney’s vibrant lights and energy takes a bit of preparation and technique. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your photography experience:
- Use a Tripod: Low light conditions and long exposure shots are common at Vivid. A tripod stabilizes your camera, reducing blur and letting you capture sharp, glowing light trails and crisp details.
- Shoot in Manual Mode: Take control of your settings. Lower your ISO (around 100-400) to reduce noise, set a small aperture (f/8-f/11) for depth of field, and adjust your shutter speed for the desired light effect. Longer exposures create smooth light trails and reveal details not visible to the naked eye.
- Arrive Early and Scout Locations: The festival gets busy fast. Arriving early lets you find the best vantage points and set up before crowds gather. Walk around the event areas during the day to plan your shots and identify unique angles.
- Focus on Details: Besides wide shots of buildings and installations, zoom in on interesting textures, reflections, and smaller interactive displays to add variety to your portfolio.
- Experiment with People: Including visitors in your shots can add scale and human interest. Capture candid moments of people interacting with the light sculptures or admiring the displays.
Final Thoughts
Vivid Sydney is more than just a light show — it’s a celebration of creativity, technology, and community. Every year it gets bigger, bolder, and more photogenic. Whether you’re a photographer, an artist, or just someone who loves a good night out in the city, this festival has something for everyone.
