Novel coronavirus (COVID-19): There is no need to bulk-buy products at supermarkets including toilet paper, paracetamol and canned food.
The best way to protect yourself is the same as you would against any respiratory infection. Practice good hygiene by:
- cleaning your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub
- covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or a flexed elbow
- avoiding close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms.
- making sure you stay home if you are sick.

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Here’s what you need to know:
- As cases near 100,000, W.H.O. calls for wider action.
- First death is reported in Britain as doctors lament a shortage of beds.
- In Bethlehem, concerns about the virus limit visits.
- The Chinese province where the virus first appeared has first day with no new cases.
- Mike Pence pledges federal support to Washington State.
- Here’s what to do if you think you are sick.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. Sources state that Corona Virus started with bats carrying the diseases into Wuhan into the markets, they say that then got into food, people sold it and ate. You know what happens next!
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include:
- regular hand washing,
- covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing,
- thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
- Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

Where’s the Toilet Paper?
Since the Corona Virus hit Australia, Aussies have been completely freaking out, and now are “panic buying” items such as toilet paper, hand sanitiser and tissues. Stores shelves are completely empty. Customers are legit having fights to get these supplies.
Why are they buying tissues, toilet paper, rice, pasta etc?
Consumers are mainly buying these items as there is no expiration date, meaning they can last for a long time. I believe that people are truely over-reacting. Consumers need to use their common sense. Get the things they need and also stop “panic buying” there actually is a few countries working on a cure for it.. we’ll see how that goes! We all should just practice washing hands and simple hygiene! This’ll fix it!
People are panic buying as that now with the virus, people are worried that there will be none left, so they buy heaps of items.. and looked what happened.
Toilet paper manufacturer Kleenex has reassured customers there’s no need to panic as shoppers strip shelves of the product amid the coronavirus outbreak.
“We can assure you we will not run out of Kleenex toilet paper,” spokesperson Gabbi Davidson told Sunrise from a distribution centre storing mountains of rolls
More info to come.
Why Toilet Paper & Not Other Things?
Niki Edwards, School of Public Health and Social Work, Queensland University of Technology:
Toilet paper symbolises control. We use it to “tidy up” and “clean up”. It deals with a bodily function that is somewhat taboo.
When people hear about the coronavirus, they are afraid of losing control. And toilet paper feels like a way to maintain control over hygiene and cleanliness.
People don’t seem interested in substitutes. Supermarket shelves are still full of other paper towels and tissues.
The media has a lot to answer for in regards to messages around this virus and messages to the public. While honesty about threats is critical, building hysteria and promoting inappropriate behaviours is far from ideal.
